Now the term digital is no more a word in science and technology but a keyword that is restructuring the frame of worldly order. Digital is a new way of moving the world, in other words, 'an invisible hand'. Since the early 1990s, Korean modern poetry has published a number of new works that reflect the digital age or internet environment. The present study examined changes in Korean modern poetry facing the digital age, the possibility of the expansion of its area and the pattern of responses to overturned value system focused on recent real cases and works, and suggested the necessity for a new form of literary community.
New areas expected to emerge in the new literary environment of the digital age are hypertext poems, multimedia poems, pastiche poems, etc. The first is the possibility of hypertext poems. A document composed of HTML, a computer language, displays the greatest power in that it works as if it were a massive document created by one person although in fact it has been wrote by many different persons. Therefore, hypertext poems based on the internet are regarded as extensive literary works as well as literary communities of a new dimension. The second is the emergence of poetic works that apply multimedia technology. New genres such as 'multimedia poems', in which digital technology functions as an important element not only in the external environment but also in the inside of the works, are appearing. The third is a prospect of the rise of pastiche poems that borrows the power of the computer. It is to build a computer database of extensive literary works and historical materials and utilize it in writing poems. This attempt is still limited ro simple use of materials stored in the computer, but it is expected ro develop in much more complicated way.
On the other hand, negative influences that the internet and digital environment have on people's thinking way and value system beyond technological aspects are not negligible. As revealed plainly by the occurrence of 'Love virus', a computer virus, we are living where the value system has been overturned. It must be noted that the digital age represented by the internet may result in negative outcomes such as extreme individualization, irresponsible communication, and the consequent fall of human value system. In this context, it is necessary to examine digital environment and relevant literary trends, criticize the negative aspects, and illuminate the positive aspects.
What we need ultimately is to seek for the new identity of Korean modern poetry, observing the area of literature inevitably expanding in the digital environment. For this, we must exert efforts to create a new form of literary community based on the internet in response to the realities where value system has been overturned.
