Purpose: The aim of this study was to evaluate the usefulness of various medical treatments for the women with sexual dysfunction and the improvement of the sexual function.
Materials and Methods: Forty two who complained desire disorder and arousal disorder were tried with androgen replacement, local administration of prostaglandin E1 (PGE1), administration of apomorphine and Phosphodiesterase 5 inhibitor (PDE5I), and application of clitoral suction device. Treatment options in some case were tried sequently. The improvement of sexual function was evaluated in respect of sexual desire, sexual sensation, sexual excitement, vaginal lubrication, orgasm, sexual satisfaction with Female Sexual Function Index and subjective assessment during masturbation.
Results: Androgen (Andriol<SUP>®</SUP>) replacement over 3 months increased in sexual desire to 35.7% (5/14) and in sexual arousal response to 21.4% (3/14) without any side effect. Local application of PGE1 (Muse<SUP>®</SUP> 1000mg) improved 42.8% (3/7) in vaginal lubrication only. Apomorphine (Uprima<SUP>®</SUP> 3mg) increased 12.5% (2/16) in vaginal lubrication. PDE5I (Viagra<SUP>®</SUP> 100mg) improved sexual excitement and vaginal lubrication in 26.3% (5/19). Clitoral suction device (EROS<SUP>®</SUP>) improved the sexual sensation in 62.5% (25/40) and vaginal lubrication in 45.0% (18/40). Each treatment modality was more effective in secondary female sexual dysfunction than primary one. All of these modalities were demonstrated the improvement of a part of sexual response, but not general sexual satisfaction.
Conclusion: Although not improved sexual satisfaction, it is needed to continue studies to develop a proper indication for each treatment modality tried in this study, because of partial effectiveness in each sexual response. Since female sexual dysfunction is not solved with a simple treatment, various treatment modalities must be applied for a long time.
