Conversation is a social interaction between individuals, and particular reference forms used in the conversation comes not only from the lexical rules but also on the speaker’s sociocultural stance such as the difference in social and/or relational status with the referent and the listener. Such complexity of choosing an appropriate person reference form is challenging for the language learners who are not natives of the culture of that particular language. In this paper, the use of third person references in Korean conversation is observed through a conversation analytic viewpoint. The purpose of this paper is to discover the underlying socio-cultural root beyond the surface of conversations. By taking a microscopic look at small fragments of everyday Korean oral interactions, this paper aims to contribute to the growing studies on the architecture of the language, especially how the third person reference is shaped during a conversation.
