Childhood and adolescent obesity has been rapidly increasing during the last 20 to 30 years, and about 10% of school-age children are estimated to be obese or overweight around the globe. In 2010, obesity rate of elementary, junior high, and high school students is 10.2% in Seoul, which is one out of 10 students. Childhood and adolescent obesity is a serious social problem, however, the policy support for obesity prevention and management is insufficient.
The purpose of this study is to understand the situation of childhood and adolescent obesity and the current status of obesity-related services, to review comprehensively both domestic and foreign prevention and management services for childhood and adolescent obesity, and finally to suggest policy support plans for obesity prevention and management.
Recommendations based on this study are as follows:
Specifying the role of organization and building networks are required.
Education for obesity prevention by the life cycle is needed.
Policy for obesity of vulnerable low-income children and adolescents needs to be strengthened
Enactment of local ordinance for obesity and a friendly city environment for obesity prevention needs to be built.
The system of childhood and adolescent obesity prevention for Seoul should be established. To accomplish it, school based program for school-age children and day care center program for preschool children should be separately operated.
