In this study I analyze the syntactic structure of the complex event nominals which are deverbal nouns denoting an action or state with the underlying verb"s argument structure. I also discuss the semantic characteristics of complex event nominals and negative complex event nominals in the various sentential meanings.
This study presents the syntactic structures of the complex event nominals with different argument realizations, accounting for points neglected in the existing literature. For instance, the VP should exist inside the NP, as the negative complex event nominals can take "the negative polarity items", which only verbs usually can take. The syntactic positions of the possessive pronouns/adjectives and the adnominal agentive genitive NP are different: the possessive pronoun/adjective is located in the "poss" position, whereas the adnominal agentive genitive NP is located on the right side of the DP, a position which is also possible for the romance languages.
I test to see if the complex event nominals and the negative complex event nominals which are derived from the different semantic types of the verbs can possibly be used in different sentential meanings such as, "manner of action", "event", "fact", and "proposition".
