High drag affects fuel efficiency and lining life. Also, it is contributed to rotor thickness variation and brake pulsation. The brake system makers have studied improving the problem. In this paper, a simple simulation model to predict drag performance of caliper brake is presented. The model considers the significant factors, including lining stiffness and hysteresis, seal/groove characteristic, and stick-slide behavior between the seal and piston. The model is validated with various physical test data. The parameter study with this model would help brake engineers evaluate design alternatives in terms of drag performance and furthermore this model is very effective to do the trade-off among various design alternatives to meet the brake performance.
