There is a lot of literature on Korean troops in the Vietnam War because the war influenced so much on Korean society. However, most of scholars are interested in early stage of the war during the Johnson Administration (1963~1968) when Korean combat troops were sent. Nevertheless, the fact that rare research paid attention to Korean troops in Vietnam deserves attention. The Korean soldier in Vietnam was forgotten, while the Korean War was a forgotten war. In addition, no one has seriously considered the inter-connection between the Korean War and the second Vietnam War since 1956.
This paper focuses on: the effects by mutual influences between the Vietnam War and Korea; policy legacy of the Korean War to the Vietnam War from the viewpoint of US war strategy; evaluation of North Korea’s aggressive strategy toward South Korea during the war; the ROK government’s policy on withdrawal of its combat troops from Vietnam; and, lessons from the collapse of South Vietnamese government for the South Korean government. This analysis provides a new look at the Vietnam War.
