The purpose of this paper, grounded on the survey about learning awareness of non-Japanese majors who registered for the Japanese language courses in college, is to show their reasons and motivations in choosing to learn Japanese. The study subjects are selected first from the students of non-Japanese majors of four colleges located in Jeolla-Do province, then divided into two groups according to whether they experienced earlier exposure to Japanese education.
As to the prior learning experience of the Japanese language, 87.2% of those study subjects choose the Japanese class in college because of their being influenced by having taken Japanese previously as the second foreign language compulsory in their middle or high school. Bt the same token, as to the motivation for the subjects to take the Japanese class in college, 26.6% of them expressed their choice of the Japanese class in college by virtue of their previous experience in the compulsory in their high or middle school. Concerning their expectations as to the Japanese society, 35% of the study subjects choose the Japanese courses in order to obtain job information and opportunity for Japanese companies.
