The purpose of this study is to examine the discriminating criteria of polysemous words and multi-faceted words and their semantic properties from the perspective of the prototype theory in the frame of cognitive semantics. The results are as follows. First, it is necessary to set up a multi-faceted word between a monosemous word and a polysemous word, although the discontinuity of the form and meaning of a lexical item has been regarded in terms of monosemous, polysemous, and homonymous words. Second, polysemous words have a variety of meanings derived from the basic meanings of the lexical items, and multi-faceted words have semantic unity in which facets of lexical items complement each other. Third, polysemous words and multi-faceted words are distinguished from each other according to meaning extension, semantic asymmetry, conceptual unification, and their semantic class. Fourth, multi-faceted words have autonomous and semantic properties distinguished from polysemous words according to their perspectives. To sum up, it is important to establish multi-faceted words in the description of words, in lexicography, and in the teaching of meaning, since they demonstrate greater flexibility and explanatory power than the dichotomy of monosemous and polysemous words.
