The purpose of this study is to investigate the relationship between the phonetic realization of word-initial liquid /ㄹ/ and native speakers’ localization consciousness of Korean loanword. The allophone of /ㄹ/ has been recognized as either [l]-class or [r]-class in Korean Language; lateral sound [l] in syllable final and flap(tap) sound [r] in interconsonantal position besides [] and [rh]. However, the phonetic realization of word-initial liquid has not been studied enough so far. Therefore the particular interests of this subject are how that word- initial liquid of mother tongue are acoustically pronounced and whether that phonetic realization has any relation to native speakers’ localization consciousness of Korean loanword. To find out the above statement, based on the standards of Korean loanword, Korean experts’ localization consciousness were surveyed about Korean loanwords starting with ‘ㄹ’. In the production experiment, following investigation of the pronunciation of the subject group with focus on the sample words chosen through survey, the phonetic realization of liquid was analysed acoustic-phonetically.
