Considering that early Chosŏn’s attempt to wage a war against Ming by attacking Liaodong area in Taejo’s reign of the last decade of 14th century was not actually carried out, it is surprising that this attempt alone has stimulated many post-1945 South Korean historians’ nationalist imagination to redefine relationship between Ming and Chosŏn which had already defined by Japanese colonial historiography. This article aims to provide a post-colonial and trans-national critique to understand critically and contextually this process of rewriting the history of early Chosŏn-Ming relations in post-1945 South Korean Historiography by taking a closer look at the major works which have dealt with early Chosŏn’s attempt to attack Liaodong from 1947 up to now. First, based on trans-national understanding of post-1945 nation state building process of South Korea in Cold War era context, this article will problematize the nationalist master narrative of the post-1945 South Korean Historiography which have substantialized and territorialized what happened in many contingent ways in this contested and in-between space called Liaodong in early Chosŏn. And then, by de-territorializing early Chosŏn’s attempt to attack Liaodong and re-contextualizing it, this article will try to show possibility of the new studies on Early Chosŏn’s attempt to attack Liaodong area based on the new theoretical and empirical basis, going beyond the temporal and spatial boundaries and identities which colonialist historiography and nationalist historiography have both territorialized and substantialized in their interpretations on early Chosŏn’s history.
