The current presentation recognizes Gender Based Violence against Women(hereinafter, GBV) from the ‘unbalanced power’ perspective and re-constructs GBV within each specific context. In other words, the current presentation does not interpret and analyze GBV in the legal context only as the current legal system (law) interprets and assesses ‘violence’ with the conventional stereotypes rather than being considered the context that a victim confronted and felt at the incidence of victimization although it has been argued that the law assesses violence from the ‘rational human being’ perspective. In this sense, the current presentation focuses on victimization of violence and pains as the result of victimization from the victim-centered perspective. Also, this presentation explains resistance and movements against GBV in the Korean society with a number of examples on the premise that women’s policies, specifically anti-GBV policies have been created as the direct result of women’s movements. This presentation argues that women’s resistance is one of the ways to obtain ‘sexual citizenship’ and sexual citizenship is a fundamental principle for the policy and violence prevention education.
The notion of sexual citizenship (Richardson, 2000) which the current presentation referenced explains that sexual citizenship is discursively framed in relation to (1) practices-based rights, (2) identity-based rights and (3) relationship-based rights. The current presentation argues the possibility of resistance against GBV from the perspective of women’s life context with the concept of sexual citizenship.
