In the Joseon dynasty, only the sons of the crown prince and princess were regarded as royal grandchildren; however, the royal house did not preside over their weddings. The ceremonies were more akin to a gentry wedding. In the 18th century, the weddings of the royal grandchildren, namely Prince Euneon(恩彦君), Prince Eunsin(恩信君), and Prince Eunjeon(恩全君), were presided over by their grandfather Youngjo(英祖) because their father Jangjo(莊祖) died early. Prince Euneon was the first of the three royal grandchildren to have a wedding ceremony. Prince Eunsin and Prince Euneon had the same mother; hence, both of their weddings are recorded in the 『Euneongungwanhonryeuigwe(恩彦君冠婚禮儀軌)』. As for Prince Eunjeon, his wedding ceremony was identical to that of Prince Euneon. The wedding ceremonies of the royal grandchildren started with Gantaek, which was followed by Napchae, Chinyoung(親迎), Dongroe(同牢), and Johyeonrye (朝見禮). A review of the 『Euneongun- gwanhonryeuigwe』 shows that the ceremonies were more understated than the wedding prescriptions in 『Gukhonjeongrye (國婚定例)』. The princes usually tried on additional costumes for fitting besides the ones needed for the wedding. However, the costume made for Prince Euneon’s wedding was mostly limited to the Gongbok(公服), which was required for Chinyoung. The bride also only tried on No-ui(露衣), Jeogori(赤古里), and Chima[赤亇], which were imperative for Chinyoung. This wedding ceremony reflected Youngjo’s frugality, wherein the cost was minimized while still meeting the standard of a formal royal ceremony. This study reviews the procedures and the costumes of wedding ceremonies of the royal grandchildren. Furthermore, the accounts show that these wedding customs were more understated and simpler than the weddings of the gentry. The findings can be used to assist future studies that examine the costume culture of the Joseon royal family on a broader scale.
