We set a series of lighting conditions to investigate if illumination affects the mobility of people with low vision. A walking course of 13.5 meters with series of 40 equal luminance grey floor-obstacles and 15 grey hanging-obstacles was set under adjustable illuminance from 1000, 100, 10 lux, CCT of 6500K and 3000K. The condition with all LED switched off providing a natural daylight illuminance (DL) of about 5-6 lux from outside was also included. The luminance ratios of obstacles at 1000 lux to 100, 10 lux and to 5 lux were 8, 36 and 64. Speed, number of contacting obstacles and overall movement were recorded. Fifty low vision subjects, 7 types, and thirteen elderly subjects, with and without wearing 2-types of low vision simulated glasses, participated in the experiment. At conditions of 1000/6500, 1000/3000 and 100/3000, there were no significant difference in walking speed among low vision subjects. At 100/6500, 10/6500, 10/3000 and 5/DL, different types of low vison subjects showed significant differences of walking speed. Most of subjects reduced the speed of walking to avoid colliding with obstacles. The number of contacting obstacles did not entirely depend on the illuminance. An elaborate activity, making 2 cups of tea with specific level of water, was given and instructed to the subjects and this activity was carried out under illumination of 500 lux 6500K. We assumed that the illuminance level was enough for this specific task. There were significantly different for different types of low vision subjects to pour water to the specific level. Details will be given.
