With the rapid development of technology, people no longer remain passive receivers of cultural contents provided via the Internet. Rather, they participate as creators and providers of contents through various ways such as UCC, Blog, or Internet cafe. Subtitling on the Internet is one of them. In this paper, I tried to examine and identify characteristics of subtitling by non-professional translators on the Internet. I took six episodes from the U.S. drama, Sex and the City and contrasted them to find out characteristic features of subtitling on the Internet. The findings show that subtitling on the Internet is different from traditional subtitling in many ways. First of all, they don't seem to subject to time and spacial restraints. This is shown in the way of translation with notes or added explanation in subtitling. Secondly, mediation or intervention by translators occurs more frequently than in traditional subtitling. I concluded that though subtitling by non-professionals on the Internet is placed on a peripheral position in the whole system, it may take a central position someday, considering the widespread power of Internet.
