This study examined an open-air museum and an ecomuseums which have spread throughout many countries as an alternative outdoor museum. I described the definitions of an open-air museum and an ecomuseum, and analyzed the distinct types in terms of idea and institution, buildings, architecture, local heritages and cultures, and natural environment. Then I proposed the exemplary open-air museums and ecomuseums that local communities participate in preserving their local cultures and emphasizing their experience unlike traditional concept museums.
Therefore, I examined how open air museums and ecomuseums engage local community through participation, establishment, and operation as a network which is a radical difference between open concept museums and traditional concept museums. The purpose of this study is to suggest open concept museums in Korea, because there are more than six-hundred traditional and modern museums except no open-air museum and ecomuseum. I insists the importance and the necessity of open-air museum which lead by inhabitant.
