The purpose of this study is to discuss the definition of English dissimilation and to reinterpret it from the perspective of feature preservation, away from Obligatory Contour Principle, which has been the most convenient explanatory tool for it. In general, dissimilation is a phenomenon in which two same or similar elements are avoided from being next to each other, and is considered opposite to assimilation. But dissimilation in this paper is regarded as the result from feature preservation competition. In addition, the operation of the feature preservation on two adjacent features is due to resyllabification, a rule that applies to the first stratum of the lexicon. Unlike universal languages, English has a unique constraint, resyllabification that results in changes in syllable structure in the process of word formation. In order to reinterpret dissimilation with the view of resyllabification and feature preservation, it is necessary to establish relevant constraints and analyze the phenomenon.
