A study on characteristics of nacelle LiDAR wind direction was experimentally carried out for wind turbine power performance measurement without a met mast for absolute wind direction measurement. A nacelle LiDAR mounted on a 2 MW wind turbine in the Dongbok wind farm on Jeju Island was used for this work. A ground LiDAR was installed near the turbine, which was used as a reference device. The characteristics of the nacelle LiDAR wind direction were analyzed with carrier-to-noise ratio (CNR), data availability, blade rotation and wake effects. Some considerations for data rejection were proposed based on the results. The real wind direction was estimated from the wind turbine yaw position corrected using the nacelle LiDAR wind direction. The nacelle LiDAR wind speeds filtered from the corrected yaw position were compared with the reference wind speeds. As a result, it was found that the nacelle LiDAR wind directions were not significantly affected by the CNR and data availability, while those were slightly influenced by turbulence intensity due to the wake effect caused by the rotation of neighboring wind turbine blades. It was confirmed that yaw positions corrected by nacelle LiDAR could be used as wind directions for wind turbine power performance.
