In this paper, I investigated the development of modern design education and its impact on art education in elementary schools during corresponding periods. I also examined the contents of art textbooks published in the period of Daehan Empire and Japanese occupation (1907-1945) to discover how the modern design education system has had an effect on the art textbooks used in the elementary schools and to investigate the characteristics of the design system presented in the textbooks. “图畵臨本”, the first national art textbook, whose first edition was published in 1907, showed simple patterns which were based on natural objects or geometric shapes. “Picture Album of 普通学校图畵帖” was published in 1921. The subjects of this book included mostly natural life forms. A key feature of the design shown in this textbook was the establishment of “Pyeonhwa(便化)”, the drawing of natural things in a simplified way, which was influenced by the trends of 19th-century Western art nouveau and introduced in Japanese art education. In the third era(1938-1943), Japanese imperialism and the Japanese war system affected the subjects of drawings. Especially, the influence of traditional Japanese culture was apparent during this period and the concept of plane design was extended to social and cultural dimensions. In the fourth era(1941-1945), the contents of art textbooks changed to those related with daily necessities and war supplies because Japan was 근대 초등미술교과서 다시 읽기 91preparing for the World War. Finally, a key feature presented in elementary school art textbooks was the introduction of “mechanical drawing design” which was a method of design education using “plane geometric drawing techniques” in the modern elementary school art class.
