This study explores the application of pragmatics for the university students’ improvement of English communication skills in web-based blended learning contexts. This paper first briefly introduces two language teaching methodologies, Communicative Language Teaching and Cooperative Language Learning, which focus on the learners’ communicative competence. The paper then examines the course Understanding English Pragmatics, which is implemented through web-based blended learning, with reference to the management and procedures. It explores how pragmatics works in practice by investigating students’ application of the major topics in pragmatics (e.g. deixis, implicature, politeness and cooperation, speech acts, constructing dialogues, narratives) and their analysis in multimedia resources (e.g. movies, animation). This study confirms the contribution of pragmatics in improving English communication skills in EFL contexts. (Dongeui University)
