This paper analyzes Anne Sexton’s poetry from the perspective of the politics of shame, focusing on shame and the female body. The affects of shame and disgust are deeply intertwined in ethics and subtly permeate into individual life. Shame arises from deprivation and alienation that is revealed in the process of the subject satisfying the desire for an ideal self. Placing shame on others has an underlying unconscious intention to restore one’s own narcissistic and omnipotent world. Patriarchal society has internalized shame in women and implicitly accepted the assumption that women’s bodies are the object of desire or disgust. Sexton examines aspects of shame overlaid on the female body, such as menstruation, masturbation, the womb, and abortion, from a political standpoint. Her poems, in which her shame is expressed, are accompanied by a sense of resistance associated with her own body. Sexton’s poetry, which resisted the social oppression that imposes stigma and shame, contributes to dispelling prejudices against abnormal lives in modern American society.
