In December 2019, the outbreak of the respiratory syndrome disease COVID-19 referred to by the World Health Organization(WHO), stopped movement between countries worldwide, and restricted contact with people within one country. COVID-19 have been suspended due to social, cultural, and economic changes around the world, and digital, which enables non-face-to-face communication, is becoming part of a new order, and we see it as a form of the “New Normal Era.”
The museum is a facility that collects, manages, preserves, researches, exhibits, and educates materials on history, archeology, humanity, folklore, art, animals, plants, minerals, science, technology, and industry to develop culture, enjoy culture, and promote lifelong education.
The origin of the museum is told from the ancient Greek period, and the main function and role of the early museum was to collect and preserve artifacts. From the 17th to the 18th centuries, the social and educational functions and roles of museums were emphasized by the influence of the Enlightenment.
The COVID-19 that occurred in 2019 was an event sufficient to cause a change in the function and role of the museum. Due to COVID-19, museums have been suspended and reduced worldwide, and reopened museums have used digital content as a way to cope with the spread of COVID-19. According to the “Report Museums and COVID-19” survey of 1,600 museum workers and experts from 107 countries around the world conducted by the International Museum Association(ICOM) and UNESCO, museum activities have been suspended and reduced worldwide due to COVID-19. Since then, the 2021 International Museum Association and the UNESCO report have regional variations, but museums have reopened and used digital content as a way to cope with the outbreak and spread of COVID-19.
Since the mid-20th century, interest in digitalization of museums has become more active due to COVID-19. And this can be seen as a new paradigm for museums.
In museum education, digitization has been shown as remote education that allows instructors and learners to learn at the desired time at the desired place without time and space constraints through various educational engineering media, and this change causes job changes for educators.
Research is being conducted on the roles and competencies required in the New Normal era in various occupations. The museum, a socio-cultural institution, is also making changes to keep pace with the New Normal era, which can be expected to have changes in the roles and capabilities required by the museum’s major personnel. Therefore, this study aims to examine the actual condition of museums in the New Normal era and to examine the changed role and capabilities of the museum education expert, Educator, in a new museum environment.
