The Breaking away from the existing research perspective that focuses on the heterogeneity and specificity of North Korea, this study intends to study social mobility as well as social inequality, a major topic of discussion, through educational phenomena by considering the aspects of North Korean society as a modern society. North Korean society has undergone many changes since the mid-1990s after the economic hardship called the “Generation in arduous March”. This study aims to provide an in-depth understanding of the current reality of North Korean society by analyzing changes in North Korean education that are the most conservative and reflect society through a competitive approach. Although the North Korean authorities still monopolize the education system, changes are taking place throughout the educational culture. Screening theory and status competition theory, which are theories that take a competitive approach, can be used as useful theoretical frameworks to explain the educational phenomenon occurring in North Korean society. Paying attention to the process in which the movement of North Koreans is justified through education, and the North Korean authorities use it to achieve its intended purpose, while social indolence is resolved, and educational competition is activated. It can be seen that it promotes maintenance and development. This thesis will provide an in-depth understanding of North Korean society by providing information on the dynamics of North Korean society and the direction pursued by the North Korean leadership by studying the relationship between North Korean education and social class mobility.
