This article explores the uses and improvement plans of qualitative methodology in North Korean studies, focusing on the indepth interviews with North Korean defectors. The post-cold war research tendency in North Korean studies has been shifted from the ideology-centered approach to the positivist approach and from the macro approach to the micro approach. In addition, since the mid-1990s, the qualitative studies using interviews with North Korean defectors have been incorporated into North Korean studies. However, existing qualitative research in North Korean studies has struggled with the problem of reliability stemming from the dilemma of generalization and reflexivity. Thus, this article provides the alternative approach to the qualitative methodology in North Korean studies through reevaluating the problems of analytical generalization and reflexive representation.
