Starting the first exhibition of in October 2013, a chef director Younghan Chung held the fifth exhibition of ‘MinimalHouse’ this July (2015). The exhibition ‘Minimal House’ is a long term exhibition that is held twice a year forfive years, holding ten relay exhibition in a total. For each exhibition, ‘Minimal house’ provides an opportunity to three architects to display built project or the project to be built with a common theme of ‘Minimal A minimal house is not a small house. Yet, it is not a tiny house either. Then, would it be an economical house?
From the beginning, the meaning of ‘Minimal house’ should not be defined by a chef director. Focusing only on the price and the size of a house is the starting point of the exhibition ‘Minimal house’. Looking at the recent building trend that mimics popular styles of architecture from abroad countries or limits the opportunity to the economic value, I realized a necessity for tightening a gap between architects and the public. The price and size of a house that we are familiar with is relative. However, it is natural a little house to become a very tiny house for someone and expensive price to feel reasonable for someone depending on the personal memory and experience. Furthermore, It is irresistible to have distinct needs of space and financial sense for each person, even for family members.
However, most of the people leans towards the size of the house over the quality and needs of space in order to avoid any following comparison and judgment on the digits of their bank account. Thus, even before having a chance to question the way we obtain a house, our lifestyle is aching from the identical size and uniform structure of condominiums. To mend this sickness of our society, we need to reach out to the true customizing just like tailoring a cloth to fit perfectly. Until now, even though there were various or fancy clothes, we have experienced discomfort due to the feeling that they were made for the manufacturers, not for the users. As much as finding a perfectly fitting clothe, the way we obtain the clothe -the way we own the property- is crucial.
Long time ago, Friedrich Engels declaimed that ownership of a profitless house would degenerate a laborer to a serf. Rather than owning a house, in the past, people took for granted inheriting a house or paying rent for a house. However, in 1937, anyone could own a house with the advent of the ‘Mortgage loan system’ by Federal Housing Administration of United states to ease the housing shortage after the World War I. Like Engels said, this method of ownership turned us into a modern serf, who works the entire life to pay off the loan for housing.
Considering the housing market under the current economic condition of South Korea, we still depend on borrowing housing loan for large scale condominium by major construction firms as a part of the government led development projects. I consider this is the time that architects and the public need to contemplate together about how to define the proper space for one’s lifestyle and what is the type of house that reacts on one’s lifestyle through the value of the ‘Minimal’ as I mentioned above. The contemplation begins from looking at the meaning of the minimals in the daily life and determining the definition of appropriate living space. The ultimate goal of the exhibition ‘Minimal House’ is finding diverse pictures of dwelling of this era that must expand its meaning from ownership to share and from occupying a space to possessing time.
