This research of neighborhood units is applied to a range of types of theory and practice in architecture and urbanism investigated from Modernism to contemporary positions covering recently built works and theoretical drawings responding to design issues of community; place or circulation, public or private, figure or ground, architecture or context, and so on. The neighborhood units, modern and contemporary, address a large collection of patterns implemented in many cities or districts that have been in continuous use and still suitable for replication. It is evident that the analysis of the causal chain between neighborhood patterns or urban patterns can provide their primitive concepts of architectural requirements over places as well as times and therefore the rationale for each design concepts incorporated in the patterns can be developed for the activities of urban regeneration in terms of provision, circulation, community and governance. As a two-dimensional map of an urban space describing the relation between built and un-built space, it is used in analysis of neighborhood unit patterns. With Nolli maps denoting public space and block pattern diagrams, the literature review of the figure-ground theory of neighborhood unit types based on the cases in tables is to focus on sequential agenda to carry out each pattern in the period. The main research objectives is to suggest an architectural approach of neighborhood environment for the pedestrian and it is to create an urban environment in which building and space reach to optimum balance with shared dialogue between the public and the private.
