The purpose of this study is to account for the patterns found in the adaptation and adoption of English vowels in SC within the framework of OT by McCarthy & Prince(1995). This paper develops as follow: In chapter Ⅱ, comparing with previous analyses based by rules, OT gives a full illustration to universal and individual linguistic features through distinctive rankings of universal and violable constraints in different languages. Such a OT can represent the SC phonological structure of loanwords through a series of hierarchically ranked constraints which make them phonologically harmonic with the SC. Chapter Ⅲ, data concerning Chinese loanwords and OT’ fundamental constraints are presented. For this, we proposes an optimality-theoretic analysis on adaptation of English diphthong and glide-high vowel sequencing in SC. It can be re-explained through the framework of OT as a few major constraints and their rankings show the adequacy of the analysis. First of all, we designed the ranking of constraints for adaptation of SC. And RH, GHV-[back], MAXRelease(P) that we supposed are also a direct reflection of the principle of faithfulness and unmarked in that the constraints choose a right candidate as a optimal output which is realized vowel epenthesis or vowel/glide deletion. After all, we suggest the following hierarchy; RH, GHV-[back] 》IDENT-IO, MAXRelease(P) 》MAX-IO 》DEP-IO in the adaptation of vowel of the loanwords. In addition, It is also proposed that the adaptation of glide-high vowel sequencing is attributed to the difference in the constraint ranking between loanword phonology and native phonology. In Chapter Ⅳ, we examined tone addition suffix with loanwords incurred as a result of the adoption in SC within OT treatments of reduplication. It also can be proved an alternative supposition of difference between loanword phonology and native phonology that this study proposed. Chapter Ⅴ is a concluding summary.
