Purpose: The purpose of this study is to examine the differences in the peripersonal space due to aging and to identify the differences in the peripersonal space according to the fall risk.
Method: The study selected 10 adult males in their 20s and 20 adults aged 65 or older as subjects of study. In order to identify the difference in the range of peripersonal space due to aging, we studied the difference in reaction time and the response error to the cross-modal congruency. The fall risk of the elderly was assessed through a questionnaire, and classified into groups with high fall risk & low fall risk. We identified the differences in the peripersonal space depending on the fall risk of the elderly. The analysis with two-way ANOVA was performed, and all statistical significance levels are set at .05.
Results: The results of this study are as follows. An analysis of the differences in the peripersonal space between the elderly and 20s adults showed an interaction effect on the line 3. However, there was no interaction effect on lines 1, 2 and 4. An analysis of the differences in the peripersonal space depending on the risk of falls among the elderly showed no interaction effects. However, the reaction time of the group with a higher fall risk on line 3 was slower than that of the group with a lower fall risk, and the reaction time was faster under the condition of cross-modal congruency than the condition of non-congruency.
Conclusion: Overall, this study has identified the aspect of increasing fall risk as the peripersonal space is formed narrower.
