Color education has been discussed as an important aspect of hobby-related education for senior citizens who wish to lead healthy and meaningful lives, particularly given the growing proportion of seniors and longer life expectancy in Korea. However, not enough attention has been devoted to understanding seniors’ interests and educational needs nor to studying topics related to their primary interests or programs that incorporate colors. Therefore, to assist color education program development, this study led a focus group interview with active seniors in their 50s and 60s and conducted a survey of institution-based color education programs. The study aimed to investigate active seniors’ needs for and satisfaction with leisure activities, their perception of and intention to participate in color education programs, and the implementation status of color education programs. The study’s findings are as follows. First, the focus group interview participants, which were eight active seniors in their 50s and 60s with a high level of interest in leisure activities, indicated high levels of satisfaction with their daily activities and life. Second, the study investigated 10 active seniors’ perceptions of and intentions to participate in color education programs, and found that these participants perceived color education as part of watercolor education(i.e., a basic domain of art education). They favored programs that could improve their daily lives and expressed a desire to participate in education regarding color theory in the future. Third, a survey of institutional color education programs showed that most programs that have been developed for active seniors were originally designed to help the senior reach their potential through self-development. A follow-up study will be conducted in which the educational domains of the programs that are currently being implemented in these institutions will be segmented in order to develop a fashion-oriented color education program and investigate its effects.
