‘Becoming a discourse marker’ is a phenomenon where something that is not a discourse marker becoms a discourse marker. ‘Discourse marker’ helps to bind discourses or is used as a discourse scheme to deliver the intention of speaker; it is a frequently seen factor in the Korean spoken language. The goal of this study is to study the limitations of the past researches and to suggest a way of overcoming the limitations by defining the concept of ‘becoming a discourse marker’ and observing the process. Research conducted so far, the paper has pointed out that there are limitations in the precedents as they are mostly focused on the characteristics and functions of discourse markers. Also, this paper started from the suspicion about the quantitative increase of discourse markers, and it focuses on exploring the subject in the process of ‘becoming a discourse marker’. First, the concept of discourse marker and becoming discourse marker was defined. I reviewed the definitions which were given by the preceding researches and defined ‘discourse marker’ which is made by the result of ‘becoming a discourse marker’ as ‘something that helps to bind a discourse or is used to effectively deliver the speaker’s intention of the discourse to the listener’. Also, in the paper, I pointed out the limitations of the past researches in only trying to explain the research on discourse marker within the frame of grammaticalization, and I differentiated grammaticalization and becoming discourse marker. ‘Grammaticalization’ turns something that is not a grammatical element into a grammatical element, whereas ‘becoming discourse marker’ is a phenomenon where a lexicon is turned into a discourse marker. If the result of ‘grammaticalization’ is ‘grammtical element’, then it can be said that the result of ‘becoming a discourse marker’ is a ‘discourse marker’. Based on such definitions of the concept, I have defined the process of ‘becoming a discourse marker’ as ‘the basic meaning of the lexicon→ acquiring pragmatic usage → acquiring discourse function’ and observed how ‘becoming a discourse marker’ occurs in a concrete example.
