This paper examines the evolution of let’s say from an imperative verb phrase to a discourse marker, integrating Discourse Grammar theory and corpus analysis. The findings show that let’s say undergoes cooptation, leading to syntactic detachment, prosodic separation, and functional reanalysis, before grammaticalization reinforces its discourse function. Corpus data confirms its higher frequency in spoken discourse, particularly in conversation and informal registers, where it co-occurs with spoken discourse markers and numerical expressions, highlighting its role in approximation and hypothetical framing. The study illustrates that let’s say gains positional flexibility, expands its discourse scope, and increases syntactic independence, supporting the view that cooptation precedes grammaticalization. By refining the relationship between these processes, this study challenges grammaticalization-only models and contributes to research on discourse markers and language change.
