Gordon E. Jackson argues that process thought and process theology can build bridges between counseling and pastoral care by providing a variety of psychological theories, philosophical implications, and theological doctrines for pastoral counseling. Process theology states that humans are able to overcome the effects of the past because humans have a soul that seeks to follow God's purpose, and God helps humans create a new creation that is in line with God's original purpose. According to Process Thought, humans conform to the past but always have the possibility to choose a new pattern of life. God offers new possibilities, new patterns, and new moments for positive feelings of conformity for the client's transformation. God's love makes God's power relational and persuasive. With this love and effort, the client is able to break negative conformal feelings and construct new ones. Also central to God's role is the service of Jesus. Jesus is a perfect example of following God's goals. He achieved his goals with a servant's attitude. Process thought and process theology are related to psychological theories. Jung's collective unconscious is an example of conforming feelings. The accumulated layers of all human experience and history are a huge storehouse from which humans experience their past in the present. Transference and countertransference remind those engaged in pastoral care and counseling of Jesus' suffering on the cross. Pastoral care and counseling is about experiencing the client's past through empathy, feeling emotions of congruence with the client, and practicing the incarnation of Jesus in the therapeutic relationship.
