This paper aims to analysis the grammatical errors found in the writing materials of 21 high school students in Incheon. The writing materials were submitted to the book review contest. This study, as a case study dealing with a small error corpus, tries to identify trends through the frequency of error categories and subsequently analyze the implications observed in each error instance. The analysis category is divided into ‘error in applying the Korean spelling rules’ and ‘error in sentence construction.’ ‘Error in applying Korean spelling rules’ is further subdivided into ‘spacing error’ and ‘punctuation error," while ‘error in sentence construction’ is subdivided into ‘error in sentence components" and ‘error in the use of particles and endings." In students" writing materials, a total of 440 errors are found, with ‘error in applying Korean spelling rules" (400 cases, 90.91%) significantly outnumbering ‘error in sentence construction" (40 cases, 9.09%). As for ‘errors in applying Korean spelling rules," ‘spacing error" (353 cases, 80.23%) overwhelmingly outnumbered ‘punctuation error" (47 cases, 10.68%). Additionally, within the ‘error in sentence construction," ‘error in sentence components" (19 cases, 4.32%) and ‘error in the use of particles and endings" (21 cases, 4.77%) appeared in almost similar proportions. In the case of ‘spacing error,’ which constitutes the majority of overall errors, there are more instances of incorrect spacing with compound words and auxiliary verbs. This suggests that spacing is being done based on conceptual units rather than formally defined units in the dictionary. Additionally, to improve the complex spacing rules by establishing separate permissible regulations, it is necessary to study the relationship between concepts and spacing. Furthermore, more efficient methods for teaching spacing should be developed. ‘Error in sentence construction" can be attributed to writing without recognizing the differences between spoken and written language. The use or omission of inappropriate sentence components can cause errors in writing, which can not be supported by context. Therefore, students must use structured sentences to effectively convey their ideas in writing. To achieve this, grammar education should emphasize the syntactic and semantic properties of predicates as well as information structure.
