This study is on the cultivated land and kinds of Korean traditional dyeing and it's the method which is focused on expanding the many usages of natural dyeing and introducing our traditional dyeing methods to be able to exchange cultures among many artist. clothing and craft designers.
The range of this study is from I. cultivated land of Korean Natural Dyeing, II. Kinds of Naturl Dye stuff and, Traditional Mordants, ill, Traditional Dyeing Methods documents.
Under the focus is mostly on indigo and safflower dyeing Grownwell dyeing and additionally other common dyeing methods of general plants and the usage of mordants of old are shown.
The Method of studies were on old documents and through Interviewing with skilled people in the field and I have dyed by myself with methods of experiment of natural dyeing. conclusion, the most of the plant dyestuffs are cultiveted around Honam and Youngnam area, and the most of dyestuffs and dye method used traditionally are as below;
The method on dyeing of Indigo, 1) Dyeing with fresh indigo leaves 2) Dyeing with extract of indigo in ash water 3) Dyeing with Indigo precipitate 4) Composited dyeing method and safflower, Gromwell and general plants etc, are used.
The studies of natural dyeing is considered extremely practical. especially when uSing dyestuff over 50 different kinds of Indigo, Safflower and Grownwell Sappanwood. amur cork tree, yellow earth, chestnut. mugwort, onion. etc.
Additionally, the dye stuff were found to be used as medicine and incense.
And it shows dye material of the five primary color system and color sense of Korean generally.
