This study is on the current state of Korean traditional dyeing and its direction of development, which is focused on expanding the many usages of natural dyeing and introducing our traditional dyeing methods to be able to exchange different cultures among many Asian countries.
The range of this study is from Ⅰ. The History of Korean Natural Dyeing, Ⅱ. Kinds of Natural Dye stuff, Ⅲ Traditional Mordants, Ⅳ. Traditional Dyeing Methods, Ⅴ. The Current State of Natural Dyeing, Ⅵ. The Direction of Development for Natural Dyeing, to Ⅶ. Conclusion.
Under Ⅳ., the focus is mostly on indigo and safflower dyeing and additionally, other common dyeing methods of general plants and the usage of mordants are shown Under Ⅴ., the current state of natural dyeing in Korea is followed by chronological order, from the 70s to the present, through interviews with skilled people of traditional dyeing, private exhibitions of natural dyeing, prize-awarded artists, group exhibitions, workshops and actual performance. Under Ⅵ., the range of application of natural dyeing is considered extremely practical,. especially when using dye stuff over 50 different kinds as indigo, safflower, sappan wood, amur cork tree, yellow earth, chestnut, mugwort, onion, etc. Additionally, the dye stuff were found to be used as medicine, incense and press flower. The studies were on old documents, pamphlets. newspaper or magazine articles, and through interviews with skilled people in the field.
As conclusion, the field of natural dyeing in Korea has extremely developed and results in a very impressive number in artists. There are many contemporary natural dye artists, not counting the many skilled people of traditional natural dyeing. The number of artists is consistently growing, enough to establish 3 big associations. Chart no. 1 through no. 5 show only the skilled people of the traditional dyeing and the actual performance of artists. I plan to introduce the other relevent theses, lectures, and business in another study.
