Though having the tradition of Bhikku samgha, Korean Buddhism has lacked the recognition of ??la-vinaya and been tolerant toward the non-vinaya. Religious sects have the structure that the ethics are more emphasized than any other group. Despite it, the lack of recognition about vinaya may mean a serious problem of Korean Buddhism in relation with the vitality of religion.
This paper is to elucidate the problems and reasons of vinaya conception in Korean Buddhism and to suggest a modernistic alternative.
For this, chapter II `??la-vinaya problem in Chinese Buddhism` first summarizes the situation that the independent seat of vinaya can hardly secured due to the cosmological difference between dualism of Indian world and monism of Chinese world.
Chapter III `Siniyeongeung(神異靈應) of Vinaya Monks and Enlightenment-centered Structure` explains the recognition of peculiarity such as Siniyeongeung(Inspiration of Peculiar Soul) in Korean Buddhism. And it deals with the problem that the enlightenment-biased problem in Chinese Buddhism had been transferred to Korean Buddhism.
With these, we come to see that the vinaya conception problem of Korean Buddhism has not emerged recently but been related with the traditional conception viewpoint. Therefore, the establishment of new vinaya conception through the correct contents comprehension can be said to have an important necessity in modern society where the ethics and the morality are emphasized.
