Korean has not only simple additive(inclusive) focus particles such as ‘yeksi, ttohan, tto, to, but also scalar additive focus particles such as ‘simcie, kkaci. mace, cocha, pute, (-)lato, (-)manilato, (-)manto,…’. While adverbs according to the traditonal word classification like ‘even’ in English, ‘sogar’ in German carry their functions as scalar additive focus particles, not only an adverb ‘simcie’, but also a kind of postpositions or connectives/verb-endings according to the traditonal word classification in Korean ‘kkaci, mace, cocha, pute’ and ‘(-)to, (-)lato, (-)manilato, (-)manto, …’ do carry the same functions. The main goal of this paper is to describe and analyse the meaning of the scalar additive focus particles in Korean, focusing on ‘simcie, kkaci, mace, cocha’. These expressions carry the simple existential presupposition(truth-conditional) and involve a specific scalar ‘conventional implicature’(non-truth-conditional). They induce a scale into the interpretation of the containing sentence. As a result of the scale reversal, evaluation as ‘maximal’ in an affirmative context is equivalent to an evaluation as ‘minimal’ in a negative context and vice versa. The previous researchers dealt with these expressions respectively that ‘kkaci’ occurs in affirmative contexts but ‘mace’, ‘cocha’, by contrast, occur in negative contexts. This view is not accepted in this paper. The three expressions can all occur both in affirmative and negative contexts, share the common denominator of meaning and carry the same functions. One of the differences between three expressions lie in the frequency of their occurrence in both contexts.
