The goal of this paper is to account for two inter related issues : (1) How should the grammatical category of voice be understood in order to accommodate intransitive verb based passive constructions? And (2) Does the so-called Korean passive constructions based on intransitive verbs really belong to the category of passive? Passive constructions based on intransitive verbs are widely attested in the languages of the world and they usually take the form of impersonal construction. There are other kinds of such passives, however, for examples like the Japanese valence increasing passive and the so-called Korean passive that neither alter word order nor valence of the base verb. In this paper, we take up the issue of the relationship between transitivity and voice by addressing hitherto largely ignored passive constructions based on intransitive verbs that have not been properly treated under received definitions of the category of voice. Adopting the proposal put forth by Shibatani in a couple of his recent papers we demonstrate that the category of voice should be defined in semantic terms rather than syntactic terms. Under such a view of voice, it is possible to show that the so-called intransitive-based passive constructions in Korean largely belongs to the domain of the spontaneous category with a marginal overlap to the passive.
