The purpose of this paper is to present a lesson plan for process-based academic writing based on the writing courses in liberal education courses in Korea University and Kookmin University.
Writing is not a product of concluded thinking but a series of actions in which the writer formulates, actualizes, and develops thoughts through the process of reflections and revisions. Writing, which helps to improve problem-solving abilities, not only requires sophisticated thinking but also enables systematic and critical reasoning. Process-oriented writing focuses on the series of process leading to the end product instead of the complete piece of writing.
In order to apply a process-oriented approach to various social phenomena, this paper presents a collaborative model that links the discourse community, classroom and local community. This plan of instruction emphasizes group collaboration at the stages of generating and organizing ideas, or more specifically, 1) selecting topics 2) developing topic sentences, 3) collecting data, and 4) developing the outline.
The significance of the collaboration model for process-oriented writing extends beyond the use of writing as an assignment or a means of evaluation, or as a basis upon which instructors provide revision and feedback. For writing to contribute to active thinking and communication, the writing curriculum must take into account the planning process and content organization. It is also through writing that students learn how to engage in discussions within the discourse community. By challenging the conventional view of writing as an instrumental technique or the product of concluded thinking, this collaboration model proposed here introduces innovation to traditional models of writing instruction.
