This study investigated what types of utterances Korean and Japanese high school students use when they express their requests. Also, it examined how honorifics and casual languages used, considering honorific expressions are well developed in both countries. The conclusion to be drawn here can be briefly stated as follows.
Speaking to the older, the same-aged, and the younger people for conveying requests, high school students in both countries conducted direct speech(i.e. expressing the request immediately and directly) prominently. Apology-type speech(i.e. expressing requests and apology at the same time) appeared more in Japanese students, on the other hand, reason-type speech(i.e. explaining the reason for the requests in advance, and then expressing requests) was often founded in Korean students. Extra-type speech(i.e. the type of speech except the others) were more observed in Japanese students but rarely in Korean students.
In the speech of honorific request to the older people, a majority of high school students in Korea and Japan displayed honorifics. A few students showed the speech of casual language type of request and mainly Japanese students use casual language to the older.
In the case of the same aged people, it was characterized that Korean students did not use the speech of honorific request at all and all students exhibited casual language. However, in the case of Japanese students, the minority of them did the speech of honorific request.
With the younger people, most of students in Korea use casual language, honorifics was rarely founded. On the other hand, honorifics was dominant in most of Japanese students, especially in girl students.
