The present study explored whether the Perceptual Assimilation Model (PAM)’s predictions on the perceptual assimilation-discrimination relationship in non-native phonetic perception can be extended to affricate-fricative manner perception. Korean listeners were tested with English affricate-fricative /tʃa/-/sa/, /tʃa/-/ʃa/, /dʒa/-/za/ and /dʒa/-/ʒa/ contrasts in a native language assimilation task and an AX discrimination task. Both /tʃa/-/sa/ and /tʃa/-/ʃa/ yielded two-category assimilations and were discriminated very well, whereas /dʒa/-/za/ and /dʒa/-/ʒa/ yielded category-goodness and single-category assimilation, respectively, and both were poorly discriminated. These findings generally support the PAM’s predictions. One exception was /dʒa/-/za/, suggesting that assimilation overlap between non-native phones may predict the degree of difficulty that listeners have in discriminating a non-native contrast. Additionally, results showed that perception of same pairs is shaped by perceptual assimilation patterns.
