This study analyzes the detailed patterns of place assimilation in Korean using the Seoul Corpus, a spontaneous speech corpus. The results align with previous theoretical studies on the markedness hierarchy of place of articulation. Place assimilation rates varied significantly depending on the type of target consonant: over 90% of alveolar consonants underwent assimilation within phrases, while only about half of bilabial consonants did so in the same environment. The labialization of velar consonants, which contradicts the markedness hierarchy, occurred in less than 1% of cases in the ‘/ŋ/ + bilabial consonant’ environment, making it a rare phenomenon observed mostly in specific words. Additionally, progressive place assimilation in which a syllable-final bilabial consonant assimilates a syllable-initial alveolar nasal showed a relatively high occurrence rate of 67% in the ‘/p/ + /n/’ environment. However, since all instances of progressive assimilation occurred with the sentence-ending suffixes /-pnita/ and /-pnik’a/, it is more appropriate to interpret this as a morphological phenomenon involving the realization of an unusual allomorph rather than a phonological phenomenon with phonetic motivation.
