This paper discusses the emergence of negative stance-markings in Korean auxiliary constructions that consist of non-finite markers and auxiliary mal- from a diachronic perspective. At the initial stage of the grammaticalization, the auxiliary mal- still implies the source lexeme ‘stop’ as in prohibitive and cessative. However, as grammaticalization progresses, the auxiliary loses its lexical meanings and gains abstract senses such as perfective, determinative, and emphatic, and subsequently develops into a stance marker. Notably, the prohibitive and cessative indicates events that the main verb describes are not completed; however, these events in perfective, determinative and emphatic are terminative. This distinction between two groups of auxiliary constructions is dependent on the semantics of particles attached to auxiliary mal- and event schema within the frame of focus variation (Rhee 2002). Other factors involved in grammaticalization from the verb ‘stop’ to negative viewpoint markers are subjectification and intersubjectification (Traugott1982; Traugott and Dasher 2002).
