Korean auxiliaries are derived from serial verb constructions. In serial verb constructions that describe two events, one of the main verbs is grammaticalized into auxiliaries, conveying abstract meanings (see Rhee 2011). Several auxiliaries in Korean encode speakers’ negative attitudes toward situations (cf. Rhee 1996a, 1996b, 2003). Tay- and ssah- are representative negative viewpoint markers that express speakers’ negative stance with functions as iterative markers and intensifiers in addition to their lexical uses. Since tay- and ssah- have undergone similar processes in grammaticalization, they have largely identical semantic, syntactic, and functional features. This paper attempts to discuss the major aspects involved in the semantic extension and morphosyntactic change of tay- and ssah- from a comparative perspective. The findings of this study contribute to our understanding of the development from auxiliaries to negative viewpoint markers.
