Purpose: Robin Evans offered us his insight on the role of architectural drawing, which should free itself from the hegemony of representation. This study consider it as the convention of architectural drawing and, taking cues from his arguments, seeks to uncover different aspects of architectural drawing both negotiating with and opposing to that convention by examining the key drawings of the architectural avant-gardes in the 1960s and 1970s which raised important questions of the convention in every possible way. Method: Three different yet related avant-garde groups - Archigram, Superstudio, and Archizoom Associati - were chosen for their relevance with architectural drawing. The research begins with overviewing historical formulation of the convention of architectural drawing, followed by theoretical investigation of possibility for drawing to deviate from its established convention. In doing so, key contemporary theoretical arguments are briefly reviewed in relation to one another to position the convention and the post-convention. Then key drawings of the chosen avant-garde groups are to be discussed in detail, focusing on their post-conventional characteristics. Result: Post-conventional disposition of the architectural drawing includes: deliberate expressive quality against re-presentational one, drawing’s expanded role into both theory and practice of architecture, and finally criticality against both circumstances conditioning architecture and disciplinary formation defining architecture itself. These findings may serve as useful and appropriate tool to further look into the state and ever-evolving role of architectural drawing of the present time.
