Morphosyntactic processing involves grammatical knowledge and real time sentence processing ability, which simultaneously interact with each other. To elucidate this multifaceted phenomenon, the present paper discusses relevant theories and the empirical findings with a focus on L2. To this end, the present study reviews a range of current theoretical perspectives covering learners’ grammatical knowledge from domain-specific theories of linguistics (e.g., the Shallow Structure Hypothesis, (Clahsen & Felser, 2006a)) as well as more domain general theories that involve general information processing through attention and memory (e.g., cue-based parsing in L2 (Cunning, 2017a) and the DP model (Ullman, 2001a)). A critical review of the findings of 11 ERP studies examining L2 morphology processing suggests that several learner factors, along with feature checking dependency length, influence and determine the success of L2 morphology processing. These findings are suggested to be best embraced within the DP model and cue-based parsing framework.
