Purpose: The purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of response blocking (RB) training on alleviating maladaptive behavior and hyperactivity in children diagnosed with severe autism.
Method: The study involved four male children, aged approximately 7 years, who had been diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder and were capable of horse riding. The equestrian exercise program consisted of 15 sessions, including two initial sessions without response blocking (RB0), four sessions with response blocking (RB+), five sessions with RB withdrawal (RB-), and four final sessions with RB+. The effectiveness of RB training was assessed by measuring the duration of rein holding and through interviews with the primary caregivers.
Results: The findings indicated that the duration of rein holding siginficantly increased during the RB+ condition in comparison to RB0 and RB- conditions. This suggesetd that RB training effectively enhanced horse riding behavior. Caregiver interviews further revealed that the equestrian exercises conducted after RB training led to improvements in self-directed behaviors, encompassing responses, acceptance, self-stimulatory actions, and imitative behaviors. It also resulted in enhanced social skills, including increased response to name-calling, decreased response to tantrums, and increased eye contact.
Conclusion: The application of equestrian exercise combined with response blocking appears to be a promising alternative therapeutic approach for ameliorating problematic behaviors and enhancing social skills in children diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder.
