This paper is an essay to understand the contradictory historiography of Theodor Mommsen, who as a liberalist extolled Julius Caesar to the skies. His description of Rome shows the resemblance between Caesar’s times and his own. Caesar had to fight against the nobles in order to rehabilitate the Roman republic for the people and Mommsen also had an antagonism against the established politicians. This is revealed in his praise of Caesar’s attitude against the Roman noble. The German scholars had a tendency to see Caesar as a saviour of the contemporary German Empire. Mommsen received it and applied it in the 5th Book of his History of Rome. This aspect was a model case of sharing a common interest for the national problem between the scholars and teachers. He also liked to compare the historical persons and used the biography in order to show the defaults of the contemporary politicians. He had a great fear that a history might be misused for the autocracy and despotism based on the popularity. In sum he had the goal of liberalism to the death and used the case study of Caesar not for the imperialism of German Empire but for the criticism of the contemporary politics. So Th. Mommsen should be treated not only as a great historian but also as an insightful history educator of the last century.
