In this study, we examined the use of the negative form of souda in inference, using the natural speech data of Japanese native speakers. The results are as follows.
First, nasouda is often used in spoken language when connecting to verbs, although no examples were found in written language. The word sounimonai, which is rarely used in spoken language, was often used in written language. Second, action verbs tended to be connected to souda rather than nasouda, and stative verbs were not found to be connected to sounimonai. Third, the negative form of souda attached to adjectives is much more frequently used than souzanai. Fourth, the only negative form of souda that connects to the negative form of nouns is nasasouda. Fifth, regarding usage patterns by gender, when connecting adjectives and nouns, nasasouda is mainly used, regardless of gender. Conversely, when connecting to verbs, men used nasouda frequently, while females used nasouda and nasasouda at the same rate. Finally, there was no difference in the mode of use by age.
