This paper examines the formation process of the term "oshi", which has recently become prevalent in modern Japanese. Originally derived from the verb "osu" (to recommend), the evolution of "oshi" was clarified through an investigation of dictionary entries and examples from corpus, organized by time period.
Dictionary analysis confirmed that the meaning of the verb "osu" (to recommend) was expanded to signify a noun referring to a person or object that one supports and promotes. Furthermore, corpus analysis revealed that the noun "oshi" first appeared in the mid-1900s and became established in the 2000s, particularly within the context of idol and anime culture, as a term for an object of personal affection.
These findings illustrate that in modern Japanese, "oshi" has evolved from signifying an act of recommendation to representing support for a specific person or object based on personal preference.
